Mortal coil does not support joystick control. Mission 1 has been designed in such a way that you the player will be gradually introduced to controls and strategy.

Pretty simple, you try to keep the balls from going past yoy. Every time a ball passes by you, you lose health (just like mortal combat, get it). The balls come from the strange metal planetoid in the middle of the screen.
