Description
AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS is an adventure and educational video game, based on the famous novel of the same name. The game was created by
Novotrade International, Inc. and was released in 1994 on the DOS platform.
The protagonist in the game is an Englishman, named Phineas Fogg who places a bet to travel the world in 80 days. To win this bet, he sets out
from his homeland accompanied by his pet monkey, Sydney and a world map. However, his adversary Baron Henry Hogsbreath takes it upon himself
to foil Fogg’s plan and introduces several obstacles and challenges in his way. The map guides them to their next destination and on clicking
on a particular country, also gives a brief description. On reaching the destination, Fogg and Sidney make stops at the popular tourist destinations
in the area, but are faced with a few challenges, mostly introduced by Hogsbreath which they need to overcome to move forward in their journey.
To remove these obstacles, the player can use the four tools that are available at the bottom of the screen. One of them is a pencil which can bring
to life anything that’s drawn by it. There is also an eraser which the player can use to erase things, such as stop signs. The educational part
of the game comes through from the text that is displayed on the screen, explaining certain situations, and providing information about the current spot.
The game attempts to improve the player’s reading skills and also enhance their vocabulary. Foreign expressions are displayed on the screen and the
Player can click on ‘hot words’ to know their meaning. The graphics of the game is colourful, and the dialogue is humorous and entertaining.
