Description
Atlas is a managerial game set in the medieval era. The game was originally developed by the Japanese development company, ArtDink in 1991 and later
modified and released in Germany in 1995.
In the game, the player assumes the role of the captain of a ship, who is in a binding contract with the king of Portugal. The terms of the contact states
that in exchange of 10,000 units of gold per year, the captain must explore the area several kilometres south of Portugal and relay valuable information
back to the king. This mission would continue for 5 years during which the player will brave the high seas as a trader and merchant and secretly spy for
the crown. All valuable goods that are discovered would be property of the captain and he can trade/sell them at his free will; however, all information
would be property of the crown and needs to be delivered to Portugal immediately. Roaming the seas brings it’s own challenges and the captain must
successfully manage his funds and the crew to be able to fulfil the terms of the contract. Guided only by a map and 15th century technology, the captain
must ensure smooth sailing of his ship, while avoiding venturing off course and keep an eye out for any valuable information that can be relayed back to the
king. He also needs to be on the lookout for valuable goods and artifacts and trade wisely to generate more income and ensure the continuation of the voyage.
Atlas has been lauded for it’s original theme and near perfect representation of 15th century society.
