BabyType Is an educational title released in Europe in 1994. The game uses the DOS platform and is available in four languages - English, German, French and Russian. BabyType is mainly directed towards young children and helps them develop their typing skills. However, there are varied difficulty levels in the game which make it suitable even for older age groups.
The protagonist of the game is a small furry creature, which needs to move from left to right on the screen while being chased by one enemy or the other. However, to move forward, the player needs to clear all the obstacles in front of the creature. These obstacles are in the form of letters on a platform resembling the keyboard keys. The player needs to type out the same letters in the keyboard and the obstacles start disappearing one by one.
Time and accuracy are of utmost importance in the game, pressing a wrong key will add up as mistakes on the mistake bar. Once the mistake bar fills up, the game is lost. The game offers adjustable difficulty levels, and the player can choose the characters they want to play with. The difficulty levels also rise significantly as one progresses in the game. Every level is divided into stages, each more difficult than the last one. Failure to type fast enough or making too many mistakes while typing can end the game quickly. The first stage is simple with only two keys and the spacebar which ultimately rises to 15 different characters. Points are awarded for every correct key stroke. New keyboard characters are introduced at the start of every level and typing them out fast enough can earn bonus points.
