| PLAYING THE GAME |
--------------------
The object of CHAMP Centiped-em is to use rid the mushroom patch of the
infesting insects, including the spider, flea, scorpion, and the Centipede!
Use your controller to aim your shooter and press the fire button to launch
your missiles. You can only fire one missile at a time, so you must wait
until your shot either hits something or reaches the top of the playfield.
You start the game with 3 lives (5 in EASY mode). A bonus shooter is
awarded every 12,000 points. The game ends when all shooters have been
destroyed.
The Centipede
-------------
Each level starts with the centipede making it's way down towards your
shooter. With each level, the centipede divides into more sections,
making it more difficult to destroy. A level is completed when the
entire centipede is destroyed. If the centipede reaches the bottom,
it will start to 'multiply', making it virtually impossible to destroy
and avoid it. The centipede is divided into segments which can be
either an independant head or a body which follows it's head. Shooting
a centipede head earns 100 points; shooting a body segment earns 10 points.
The Spider
----------
The fastest and most frequent insect is the spider. The spider enters
from the left or right and tries to squash your shooter. The spider
may eat some mushrooms if they get in it's way. Shooting a spider
earns 300, 600, or 900 points, depending on the distance between the
shooter and spider.
The Flea
--------
Every so often the flea will drop down from the top of the screen to
fill the playfield with more mushrooms. It takes two shots to destroy
the flea. After the first hit, the flea moves twice as fast, so be
careful! Destroying the flea earns 200 points.
The Scorpion
------------
Eventually the scorpion will make it's appearance. The scorpion
doesn't travel low enough to destroy your shooter. When the scorpion
comes in contact with a mushroom, the mushroom is poisoned. If a
centipede collides with a poison mushroom, it darts straight downward
towards your shooter! Shooting a scorpion earns 1000 points.
The Mushrooms
-------------
Throughout the playfield are mushrooms which create a maze for the
centipede to follow. It takes 4 shots to destroy a mushroom.
Destroying a mushroom earns 1 point. When your shooter is hit,
all partially destroyed mushrooms are counted, earning 5 points each.
CHAMP Mode Enhancements
-----------------------
Playing Centiped-em in CHAMP Mode is similar to Classic mode, with these
additions:
Multi-fire shooter
------------------
Level 1 starts with a multi-fire shooter that can shoot up, left, and right
at the same time! Unfortunately, your weapons are only powerful enough
to last for one level before they must be re-charged for a level.
The Snake
---------
Every so often the snake will wriggle across the screen. The snake can
appear as low as your shooter so be on the lookout for it. When a
snake comes in contact with a full mushroom, it digs up a rock which
cannot be destroyed. All rocks earn 5 points when your shooter is
destroyed. It takes two shots to destroy the snake. After the snake
is hit once, it gets very scared and quickly darts the way it came.
If you manage to destroy the snake, you wil earn 500 points.
The Fly
-------
Also infesting the mushroom patch are flies which you must avoid. Flies
attack in a zig-zag pattern, making them hard to dodge. If you manage
to destroy one, they are worth 400 points.
The Black Widow
---------------
The most dangerous creature roaming the patch is the Black Widow. It's
movements are similar to the spider, with a little more quickness. Also,
the Black Widow will shoot out it's web at your shooter to try to
capture it! If you get caught in the web, your shooter will not be
able to move, but it will still be able to fire. You must 'wiggle'
your way out of the web to be able to move again. Shooting the
Black Widow with your forward gun earns 300, 600 or 1000 points.
Shooting the Black Widow with your side guns always earns 500 points.
Shooting a spider with your side guns always earns 150 points.
