Description
Design Your Own Railroad is a strategy game developed by Dill Software. It was released in 1990 on Apple II followed by
DOS and Macintosh in the subsequent years. It is a single-player game where the player gets to design their own railroad,
meant to transport goods from one place to the other. Creating an efficient design would involve making several strategic
decisions like choosing the route and appropriate operational modes. The player can add terrain and locations as per their
liking, such as mountains, rivers, cities, and many more. The game also offers several track accessories and tools that can
be used to customize tracks and build a complex yet effective system. The trains are customizable as well and allow for
features to be added as per the player's preferences. Design Your Own Railroad has tried to incorporate train operations
such as switching tracks, coupling-uncoupling of cars, and speed management into the game in a realistic manner.
Apart from train operations, the players also need to manage the economic aspects such as budgeting, profit-making, and
dealing with any losses due to any delays or operational failure. Design Your Own Railroad appeals to people interested
in model train design and who are willing to learn more about railway operations and management. The game brings to light
the several challenges of keeping such an intricate yet efficient mode of transportation running smoothly and the role of
many people involved in the process. The game provides a top-down perspective and can be played using the mouse.
The controls are simple with drag-drop features available for track placements.
