Description
Die Welt is an action game that was released in Germany in 1996. The game was released as promotional material for a German
Newspaper of the same name. The aim was to increase the subscriber base for the newspaper Die Welt. It is a single-player game
and runs on the DOS platform. The player assumes the role of a paperboy who is tasked with supplying newspapers to the residents
of a suburban housing street. The protagonist rides a bicycle along the street, carrying the newspapers and throwing them on the
residents' Postboxes. The throw is automatically triggered when the boy rides over a blue arrow on the street.
The objective is to deliver all the newspapers while avoiding collision with moving or parked cars or other distractions such as
children throwing objects on the street. The protagonist will also need to ride through some narrow lanes and therefore must
navigate carefully to avoid accidents. The speed of the bike will gradually increase with the distance covered making the task
more challenging. Even one collision will result in the trip being aborted. The player gets a top-view perspective into the gaming
field. The game can be controlled using the keyboard and the player can steer the bike using the cursor keys (+ and -).
The game language is German since it was targeted mostly towards the German audience. Die Welt features a scoreboard, where
players can enter their names on reaching the target scores. Although designed solely as promotional material, Die Welt offers
an engaging gaming experience by capitalizing on the mundane task of newspaper delivery.
