Description
Digital Downs is a strategy game based on horse racing and management. The game was developed and published by Accidental Software
in 1991 and runs on the DOS platform. At the start of the game, the player is provided with some money which can be used to bet
on horses. The odds of the particular horse winning the race is also displayed on the screen, based on their previous performances.
Like an actual race track, the game offers different types of bets with varying levels of risk and reward, allowing bettors to
choose their strategy. The player gets to bet if the horse will win the first, second, or third places. There are also other
factors that contribute to the outcome such as weather conditions and competence of the jockeys. Although mostly a game of luck,
the player must consider all factors and make a well-informed decision at the start of the race to win. Once the race starts,
the player gets to view the race from the gallery in the form of moving dots on the screen. Upon winning, the player gets more
money which they can use to bet on more horses. The game will come to an end when the money runs out. The sound effects are basic,
but somehow manage to capture and enhance the excitement and energy of the racetrack. Digital Downs is Part of a niche genre of
simulation games popular in the 90s, focusing on replicating the experience of managing and participating in horse races.
It reflects the period's trend of creating detailed simulation games that offered deep gameplay mechanics within the technical
limitations of DOS.
