Dismal Passages

The ancient land creeps into the dark of midnight. Knarled trees bend slightly under the nighttime air. The black of the new moon falls against the starred sky. Behind a copse of trees a small hut sits against a garden of healthy vegetables. Out of the quiet midnight, a howl begins. The howl grows louder as the breeze turns into a ferocious torrential force. A black inky void spreads over the night sky, directed toward the hut. Awakened by a sense of uneasiness, you slide from your cot into the dark.
Your stomach turns uneasily, you realize something hideous is happening. Upon that sickening realization, the windows of your small hut explode inward. A single huge blast of wind and howling fill the hut. Your parents and sister wake suddenly. Your muscles shake uncontrollably. Something is in the hut with you and your poor family. You and your family creep to the center of the hut, where the small birch table stands frozen in the dark.
From the cover of shadow, figures appear. Three contorted beasts enter your vision. The two shorter ones are thin white creatures, with sharp blade-like claws on their long thin arms. Their elongated heads show almost no features. The tallest one stands before you and your family, his contorted animal features are almost impossible to describe. It's black sunken pits for eyes stare bleakly at you.
The word WRAITH falls upon your lips. Helplessly, pathetically, you run for the dagger that you keep in the chest. The WRAITH laughs, the sound like a shock of thunder, bounces off the collapsing walls. The WRAITH shouts a command, his two accomplices advance toward your parents. Your father brings up his shovel, and plants it heavily against the white figure's head.Seconds later, with the sound of wood splintering still in your brain, your mother screams as Dad is torn to pieces under the creature's horrid claws. Blood splatters up against the sickened walls while your mother is being dissected before your eyes. You scramble for the door, but the WRAITH expels a gaseous smoke from his hands. The room spins as the dark night flashes in front of your eyes. You hit a blood stained wall heavily and slide to the earthen floor. Smoke blurs your sight but does not shield your vision from a white creature stabbing your sister through her abdomen and ripping her into -- two -- seperate -- pieces...
Covered in your family's blood, you cower in the corner. You shake uncontrollably. They come together as three and stand before your cowering body. The two white creatures advance in front of you, the smell of rotten meat in the air. As one of them pulls its thin silvery arm back to deliver a final, killing blow - a blur, resolving into a magnificent gray wolf, flashes past you. It bounds through a broken window to tackle the aggressor that had you poised on the brink of death. The wolf's teeth sink into the creatures alien flesh, black blood spilling everywhere. The second creature stabs the wolf repeatedly while you stumble to your feet. The WRAITH, from the black eyes of his horned head, shines red light. With his disfigured hands, the WRAITH grapples the fearsome wolf. Red, shiny fluid pours from the WRAITH's arms while he mangles the gray creature's insides. He lifts the tortured wolf into the still air and flings it against a wall. You stumble into the quiet of night. There is a blast of wind, and all is still. You look back into your hut. You reenter. Your family lies in tatters. Glass and blood lie in pools in the small abode. From a darkened corner, a voice croaks. 'Hear me', the dying wolf says, his insides spread over the floor. Blood pours from the wolf's mouth, as he speaks the words that awaken you from the sleepy world of childhood into the cold morning of adulthood, 'Avenge your family, avenge me - kill the WRAITH, Vaargerold must die...
As you stumble back outside and fall to the cold earth, the words of the gray wolf echo in your head. When you awake to the sound of morning songbirds, one thought lies buried in your head - Vaargerold, in his hideous NetherRealm, WILL die...
