I played both the NES version and Arcade version, and I got to say it's pretty meh. For positive things I think the platforming is pretty fun and for the first game Mario appears in, it's decent enough. But to be honest, I got a lot more gripes with the game than pros. First off, the Luggage: Pauline for some reason left all this luggage around the level like purses, umbrellas, and stuff like that and you have to go around collecting them for points and stuff like that. But who cares about points? You don't even need them for beating the game so they're practically useless! Issue #2, Stiff Movement: This movement is garbage compared to future Mario games. First of all, you can barely get anywhere because the movement is so sluggish and don't even get me started on climbing up ladders. And the jump absolutely sucks. Not only do you get minimal height and distance with it and in order for you to be able to get distance, you have to pre-plan where you're going to send the jump BEFORE YOU EVEN JUMP! AND you take fall damage which is just plain annoying compared to newer video games. Issue #3, Enemy Hitboxes: Even if you're like two inches away from an enemy (primarily barrels, fireballs, springs, etc.) there's still a good chance you're still going to get hit. This is exactly what I'm trying to say! PUT YOUR HITBOX AROUND YOUR ENEMY AND MAKE IT LEVEL SIZE WITH THE ENEMY! NO MORE, NO LESS! Anyway, even though this game is older and a little more bugged out than people (especially newer gamers) would prefer, I'd either way give this a 4/10.
