Description
Gambys is a puzzle game that was released in Portugal. It was developed and published by Viagem Interactive and is known
to be the first professionally created video game in Portugal. The development team was led by Brazilian developers Rui Tito
and Paulo Carrasco, both of whom were well versed in creating games for the ZX spectrum. The game was initially previewed
in 1995, but the launch got delayed till 1997 due to the lack of publishers. The game was launched in Portugal under a joint
collaboration by Viagem Interactive and Portidata, while Maxis was in charge of the internationally released version.
However, the game was limited to Spain and Portugal.
The game is ecological-themed centering around a man-made apocalypse-like situation on earth. The only ones that are capable
of saving the planet from catastrophe are small creatures with magical properties, called Gambys. The Gambys are in possession
of a magical crystal that contains memories of the earth in all its glory and everything it contained. The crystal contains
images of things that existed on earth, like plants, animals, birds etc., and to save the planet, the Gambys need to release
these images into the world.
To win, a player has to piece together these images that have degenerated over time, like putting back the pieces of a jigsaw
puzzle. Once all the pieces have been put together, the Gambys move on to a new image. There are three main obstacles in the
game - a Gamby girl that immobilizes the Gambys, a Destroyer that can reverse player progress, and a ghost that can hide
the puzzle pieces from the gamer. The Gambys have their own unique abilities and need different kinds of replenishment to keep
them going. The game also offers several mini-games, including a version of Space Invaders.
