Ascaron was a computer game company headquartered in Gütersloh, Germany. The company was founded in 1991 under the name Ascon by Holger Flöttmann and developed entertainment software for the German market for 18 years, with games franchises like Patrician, Port Royale, ANSTOSS (On the Ball) and Sacred. Later it also became known for its publishing and distribution activities.
In August 2001 the company went into administration for the first time. However, the reestablishment of the company keeping all IPRs and brands made it possible for Ascaron to continue its operative business and to survive.
In July 2002, Ascaron expanded by opening a wholly-owned subsidiary, Studio II Software in the University City, Aachen (Germany) and in September 2002, the first international office, Ascaron Entertainment (UK) Ltd. with its main office in Birmingham, was founded.

Description
On the Ball: World Cup Edition is a Soccer management video game available on the DOS and Amiga platforms. The game was released in 1994 in Germany, Britain,
and Finland. Published and developed by AsconGmbH, it is a slight modification on its predecessor, On the Ball released a year earlier.
Unlike many other soccer video games, The 'On the Ball' series focuses mostly on the strategies and behind-the-scenes aspects of the game of soccer.
The player assumes the role of a team manager and takes many crucial decisions pertaining to the team. On the Ball: World Cup Edition pertains to strategies
especially to win the Soccer World Cup. The game can be played by up to 4 players, each assuming the role of team manager. The team manager takes crucial
decisions like player selection, arranging proper training programs, deploying PR strategies to better the image of the team, and overseeing the budgeting and
financial decisions. The team managers are also required to give pep talks to the team to keep them motivated and even resolve internal disputes and conflicts.
Making press releases and leading the team in press conferences is also an essential part of the job description. The team manager can single out any one player
during half-time for praise or constructive criticism. One must be careful to choose the right player to not offend any of the other players on the team, which
could ultimately impact their performance. The tactics and strategies pertaining to the game can be changed anytime based on the current performance of the team.
The team manager is also in charge of the stadium, the price management of the tickets, and the transfer of players.
