Description
Polanie is a real-time strategy game based on historical and fantasy themes. It was released in 1996 and runs on the DOS platform.
The protagonist is a young soldier named Mirek who returns from a battle to find his village razed to the ground and all members of
his tribe killed. Mirek then sets out on a quest to extract revenge from the invaders and rebuild his homeland. The only resource
in the game is Milk produced by grazing cows who wander freely in the land. Once the cows have had their fill, they return to the
village and add to the resources. Unlike other games that focus on multiple resources, Polanie's focus on a single yet
inexhaustible resource sets it apart from the other games of the genre. The game is set in medieval times with limited tools and
is filled with magic and superstitious beliefs. Woodcutters play an essential role, as they can build buildings and also fight as
foot soldiers in the war. Priests and priestesses feature in the game as healers and miracle workers.
There are also magical creatures that can either assist the protagonist or obstruct their progress. The narrative unfolds through
mission briefings and in-game events. The game includes a soundtrack that complements the historical and mythical theme, along with
sound effects for actions and events. "Polanie" is considered a significant title in the history of Polish video games, being one
of the first successful RTS games developed in Poland. It helped pave the way for future Polish game development.
The game was successful enough to warrant a sequel, "Polanie II".
