Description
Portal is an adventure game with a Sci-fi theme. It was released in 1987 and is available on DOS, Amiga, Commodore, and several
other platforms. Created by Nexa corporation and published by Activision, Portal is a landmark title in interactive fiction,
known for its complex narrative and unique gameplay mechanics. The protagonist is a returning astronaut who finds Earth deserted.
The player uses a computer terminal and an AI named Homer to explore the history and events leading to humanity's disappearance.
The game presents its story through a series of interconnected text entries, providing a rich and immersive storytelling experience.
It features a vast and intricate database system that players must navigate, filled with logs, reports, and messages that reveal
the backstory. Unlike other games of its time, Portal relies heavily on text, with minimal graphics that enhance the storytelling
without overshadowing the text. The plot is non-linear, allowing players to explore different story fragments at their own pace,
piecing together the narrative like a puzzle. There is no fixed order to explore the databases or specific levels to complete.
There is no time limit imposed on the player either. The goal is to piece together the information and throw light on the reasons
and timeline of human extinction from the planet. Portal is a single-player game and can be controlled using the Keyboard.
Players must interact with the game through a series of text commands and responses, uncovering pieces of the narrative by
accessing different sections of the database. Portal remains a significant title in the field of interactive fiction and holds
great nostalgic value to the fans of Sci-Fi games.
