Softstar (Chinese: 大宇, Da Yu) is a computer game developer based in Taipei, Taiwan (China). It was founded on April 27th, 1988, by a group of three people, and incorporated ten years later. Eric Lee is the company's CEO. Softstar has gradually gained a reputation of the leading developer and publisher of Chinese (Taiwanese)-made role-playing games. Xuanyuan Jian (1990) was one of the first Chinese-made games in the genre. Utilizing Japanese gameplay mechanics, the game was set in old China, establishing the tradition of Chinese RPGs with historical settings. Xuanyuan Jian spawned many sequels and became the longest-running Chinese RPG series. In 1995, Softstar released Xianjian Qixia Zhuan, also known as The Legend of Sword and Fairy, which became one of the most popular Chinese games of all times, inspiring not only several sequels, but also a TV series. In the second half of the 2000's Softstar began to shift its focus on online games.

Description

Prince of Evil is an Action and adventure game based on a fantasy theme. The game was released in 1993 and runs on the DOS platform. It was created by Taiwanese developers and borrows heavily from Chinese mythology. It is a single-player game and can be controlled using the keyboard. The Protagonist is a Chinese Prince who sets out on a quest to defeat the terrifying villain, the Prince of Evil. On his quest, he will encounter several obstacles and enemies, which are deeply rooted in age-old Chinese myths and superstitions. These enemies include terrifying ghosts, monsters, and magical creatures. The player will need to vanquish the enemies and overcome obstacles to progress in the game. The game features various kinds of weapons and powerups to help the players in their quest. It features objects such as Ginseng which were particularly unknown to the Western world at the time, and throws light on its medicinal properties. There are also mini-quests to find hidden treasure and other valuable items. Prince of Evil combines the elements of exploration, combat, and puzzle-solving against a dark fantasy setting to create an entertaining and immersive gaming experience. It features multiple levels each with unique designs and challenges. Intricately designed backgrounds, colorful yet functional graphics, and lifelike animations greatly add to the appeal of the game. Apart from a delightful gaming experience, Prince of Evil also provides users with valuable insights into Chinese culture and beliefs, ultimately contributing to the rise of multiculturism in the early 90s.
