Information File
INTRODUCTION
------------
Savage Future is a role-playing adventure game for the IBM
computer. The game was created by J. Kintz between January 1998
- September 1998. The game has VGA graphics and soundblaster
music and sound effects. You play the character of Rolanfox who
must explore the land of the future. There are cities, caves,
and undergrounds to explore. There is a variety of objects to
get and horrible monsters to fight. This game is free, donation information
is at the bottom of this document.
INSTRUCTIONS
------------
The first five introduction screens are passed through by
pressing the SPACEBAR key on the keyboard. The game starts with
three title screens and two story screens.
MAP SCREEN
The screen you see first is the MAP screen. This shows the
entire continent you can travel. You are represented by a small
red dot. The black box on the bottom of the screen is the text
box, it will display information to you. The square next to the
black box is the picture box. This will show you where you are
as a picture. At the very bottom of the screen is your status
bars. Your food, health, money, and bullets are shown by a bar.
When the bar disappears or is gone you have no amount of that
item. You can have 100 units of food, 320 bullets, 500 dollars,
and 100 health. If you notice the text box will show you your location
coordinates. This can be used to find areas or remember where
they are. To control your position and travel the land use the
cursor direction keys on the keyboard to correspond to the
position you want to go - North South East West. You can walk
anywhere in the continent; however, you can not go into the
ocean, the blue part around the continent. You also have a
variety of options you can choose while transversing the land.
To see these options press the SPACEBAR and move your character,
this will show you your options in the text box. To QUIT the
game press the Q key, the game will automatically quit and return
you to the system. To see your INVENTORY press the I key, this
will show you exactly how many bullets, money, and food you have,
it will also show all the objects you have picked up. Your game,
position, and objects, can be SAVED by pressing the S key, there
can be only ONE game saved at a time. To toggle the sound on and
off press the F1 key. This game can then be LOADED by pressing
the L key. Save, Load, Inventory, and Quit can NOT be accessed
while in combat mode.
When you are near a city in the game you may be able to see it,
the game will tell you that a city is nearby, if you search the
area you will be able to find it. After you find a city, cave,
tower, or underground it will be represented by a colored dot.
Eventually you may be able to get a map, the map will show where
all the cities, caves, undergrounds, and towers are.
LEGEND ON THE MAP
WHITE DOTS - Human Cities
DARK BLUE DOTS - Towers
BROWN DOTS - Fur Cities
LIGHT BLUE DOTS - Underground
RED DOTS - Caves
COMBAT SCREEN
You will be attacked from time to time in the game by a variety
of creatures. The only thing you have to protect yourself from
these horrible menaces is a gun. When you are attacked you
another screen will appear which will show the background of
where you are at. You control your character, ROLANFOX, by using
the cursor control keys. To shoot your gun at the creature press
the SPACEBAR and you will fire. If you do not have any bullets
left you will not do any damage to the creature. Each type of
creature has a different constitution so they require different
amounts of wounds to kill them. They have different speeds as
well. If the monster reaches you, you are damaged, possibly
killed. If you are killed the game ends. You may avoid the
creature by leaving the screen to the LEFT. KEEP IN MIND that if
you avoid the creature he will still be in the vicinity of the
land and will continue to attack you. The further away you are from
the creature the harder it is to hit. You may miss if the creature
is far from you on the screen. To assure your bullets will strike you
should be as close as possible. You must either evade the
creature, be killed by the creature, or kill the creature in
order to leave the combat screen. No other menu options other
than those listed are available during combat mode.
STORY
-----
The year is 2457.
In the land of Medigar there are many different races and
peoples. There are two distinct differences in the sentient
races that can be made. One are the humans - these creatures are
mostly hairless except for the tops of their heads and a slightly
over their bodies. They walk erect and have language and skills.
Their numbers are fairly large and they dwell together in small
villages. They can be cruel, but most live in relative peace
leading simple lives. There is another distinct race known as
the fur-kind. The fur-kind has many different branches, but
unlike the humans, they are covered in fur and descendants from
the forest creatures. They are the evolution of foxes, wildcats,
and wolves. They walk erect and are intelligent with
communication skills and creativity. The fur-kind dwell in
isolated areas in the large green forests of Medigar. Although
there numbers are considerable they are still all together less
than that of the humans. The fur-kind live in tree-villages and
small cabins on the ground. Because of the isolation from the
fur-kind and the humans peace has existed for thousands of years.
Trading is rare but not uncommon between the races. Technology
for all is simple. A few; however, have mastered the advanced
sciences of mind and magic.
Your name is Rolanfox, you are a member of the fur-kind. Your
descendants were the foxes, you are cunning and intelligent, not
strong, but clever and swift. In the lush trees you live in a
small cabin alone. You are a young fox, an adult, but not an old
one. You have few neighbors and although you spend much of your
time tending to your garden and searching for the occasional prey
in the woods you have a keen interest in matters of the unknown.
Your family lives within the same forest; but not close by. Your
uncle, Yowler, is also your best friend. He lives in a very
remote part of the forest and conducts experiments. His interest
in the unknown has led to your strong bond. Every chance you had
you visited your uncle. In his large house Yowler built strange
and magnificent objects. Books upon books are stacked everywhere
in his place as well as a variety of strange objects. He has
sought to understand the secrets of time and space. Eventually,
through experimentation and diligence your uncle created an
incredible invention. Many hours you spent with him, smelting
metal and plugging in wires. You knew little about what he was
doing, but it fascinated you and everyday seemed to be special.
He finally finished. The device consisted of two main pieces,
one was a large box with cables running through it that a fur
could enter, the other was a smaller box which you took with you.
You didn't quite understood what the invention was until one day
he explained.
"It's a time machine my boy!"
"A time machine? It's a big one? I've seen smaller ones that
told the time when I was in town!"
"No! No! That's for watching time go by. This is for making time
go by!"
"I don't understand."
"You see Rolan, you know how a few days ago Aunt Megad came by
with those chickens?"
"Yes, of course! They were great!"
"Yeah, they were. Anyways, wouldn't it be nice to go back that
day and have them again?"
"Sure would, but those chickens aren't coming back."
"Well with this machine you can go back to that day and get them
again!"
"Really?"
"Yeah, or you can go into the next day and see when she will come
around again, and then come back here with a full stomach!"
"That would be great, or you could see when the rains will come,
or when the mates will come around, or even when the first snow
fall will be"
"You got it my boy!"
You saw little of your uncle the next few months. He said it was
a great success and he was very happy the little you saw of him.
He brought back many strange objects. He showed you how the
device worked, but said never to use it without him. Eventually,
he said, he would take you with him, and you could see the
wonders of the future. It seemed too good to be true. One day
he came back and his face seemed gray, you had not talked to him
in a long time, and he seemed to have more white in his coat than
usual. He showed you one of his most recent things he picked up.
It fit into your hand and when you squeezed your finger it made
an explosion. Then far away a hole would appear. He said the
hole was created by objects that moved faster than you could see,
but if the device didn't have the objects it wouldn't work. He
called the objects BULLETS and the object you held in your hand a
GUN. You practiced with it, watching the birds scatter at the
first squeeze. Yowler looked troubled though, you asked him why,
but he did not answer. Finally, after he had a few drinks of
Mulberry Wine, he told you.
In the future, about 2000 summers from now, things are very grim,
he said. The world is a bad place for everyone, its much
different than it is now. The fur-kind, ALL fur-kind live in
fear. There were also strange hideous creatures that roam the
land. He had followed what had happened as best he could,
although he did not now the whole story. The humans 1500 years
summers had become more numerous, they had become more craftier
as well. They had also become more violent. The fur-kind;
however, preferring the simple life, was growing smaller.
Diseases had killed many and the forests were being cut down by
the humans to make room for their huge metal and stone cities.
Wars began to erupt amongst the humans and they built bigger and
more powerful weapons. They had developed what was called
Thermo-Atomic Bombs. The bombs had strange powers and tapped the
fabric of the universe. In an act of desperation and defeat, a
country now since forgotten used the thermo-atomic weapons on its
enemies. Then that country's enemies retailated with the same
weapons. Entire cities and millions of humans and fur-kind were
burnt alive. Fires broke out everywhere. While the wars with
the thermo-atomics occurred humans built underground sanctuaries
where they would live and work. They were far underground and
those who did not live in them suffered. The Fur-Kind did the
best they could hiding in their forests or in caves. But their
numbers dwindled even more so.
The radiation choked the land, but worse the nuclear weapons had
opened gateways to other dimensions. From the other dimensions
weird and alien creatures crossed the gateways and roamed the
land. They are vicsious and horrible, knowing nothing but to
kill. The humans eventually moved from their underground worlds,
leaving them completely deserted. They built new cities above
ground that were smaller than their old ones. They protected
themselves from the vile new creatures of the land. The fur-kind
built cities too, the few that were left. Then the land of
Medigar was ravaged by natural disasters. A powerful religious
leader had declared to the new people of Medigar that the fur-
kind were responsible for these disasters, and asked that they
all be wiped off Medigar forever.
For several hundred years fur-kind have lived in peril. While
the human race tries to rebuild itself it also has set out to
kill the furs. A special force of warriors called the Knights of
Purification was set up to find the fur-kind and destroy on
sight. Warlords and Men of Power live in large towers
controlling the lands around them. It is a time of dark vast
power and great injustices. Your uncle discovered all these
atrocities and horrors, and was especially disturbed by the
genocide of the fur-kind. For he took his machine further into
the future and found that in their future FUR-KIND HAD BECOME
EXTINCT. Your uncle told you this, his dark eyes filled with
tears. He was the only who could save his people. He began a
series of quests to find out what he could do stop this
extinction, if anything. He said he was trying to find out what
happened exactly that created the rift between the humans and
fur-kind, and to try and stop whatever it was.
Many months went by and you did not see your uncle, he said he
would come back once a month for a few days to see you and tell
you the progress lest something happened to him, someone from
this time would know about it. But after a while he stopped
coming back. You decide something must have happened to him,
fearing the worst you activated the time machine. Without the
other device; however, you will have no way to come back you
realize. But the future lies with you now, you picked up the
weapon he called a gun and as many of the bullets you could
carry. He also had a device which would tell you where you were
represented by numbers which you picked up as well. So you
activated the machine. The purple vortex opened up and summoning
as much strength as you could you walk into it and through time
itself.
CREATURES
---------
From the book Encounters by Yagwara Zug Jushumo in the year 4531.
(banned in the year 4537)
"There are many different creatures that our ancestors unleashed
upon our world with their weapons of mass destruction. Many were
relatively harmless, others died quickly. But a few thrived on
our dimension, and those few are unlike anything we have on
Medigar. They are ravenous beasts that can't be taimed or
controlled. Here is a list and their descriptions:
The Wargamor - This creature is green and lizard-like with pale
white eyes. It appears to be relatively intelligent and will
stalk its prey with speed and skill. Its one goal is to kill
leaving the least amount of damage, it uses the body of the
victim in a variety of ways, the bones provide weapons, the skin
provides protection, the muscles provide food. They often hide
and wait for long periods of time and hunters must be skilled to
catch them.
The Trika - The trika is a bizarre orange creature with tentacles
used for propulsion. It has been seen climbing up trees and
falling on its victims. It lacks even the most rudimentary
intelligence as it has been seen attacking auto-carriages, trams,
and even bridges. It can go relatively fast so hunters or
travellers believing that the tentacles can slow it down are in
for a surprise.
The Wyryx - Some say these creatures are actually super-
intelligent, others say they are dumber than mules. They are
like giant worms with triangular heads who kill their prey, but
never eat them. They actually digest rocks and minerals, but are
very territorial of their areas. Their coiled bodies are fast
and they are viscious fighters. Although they always are alone.
Some say they have hidden colonies that meet in the darkness of
underground.
The Cave Dwellers - During the time of the Great Atomic Wars
humans were disfigured by radiation. Some of the humans were
altered severely and a race of large dumb troll-like beings were
formed. They are never found above ground but prefer the
darkness of the caves. They are incredibly strong and will fight
to the end to protect their caves. Their numbers are unknown at
this time because they live often up to a mile under the earth.
It should also be noted for the traveller that the undergrounds
that we humans used to inhabit are now patrolled by the Revus
Guard Units. These were set up after the great evacuation of the
shelters to protect them, they will fight any who trespassers in
the underground, so be warned. They are cyberorganisms that are
half organic and half machine. There are treasures in the
underground still, but an explorer had best be ready to deal with
them.
Also, for the traveller who is covered with fur a word of
warning. The knights of purification will stalk and kill any
they do not see as human. It is best to travel by night and
avoid these creatures if you want to stay alive."
HINTS
-----
Get a map as soon as possible. The only way to get money at first
is by killing the knights. Kill as many knights as possible and
get a map, this will show you where all the cities and other
important locations are. Glow orbs are needed to get into the
caves, that is another wise purchase to get as well. Save your
game frequently. Talk to everyone in the cities, both the fur peeps and
human cities.
