Description
St. Thomas is a strategy game developed by Sphinx software and published by Rainbow Arts Software. The game was released in German in 1994 on Atari and the following year
on the DOS platform. The game is based on piracy in the Mediterranean Sea.
The game is set in the 17th century when piracy had reached a menacing situation. The player needs to plan a marine trip from Antigua to St. Thomas through the Caribbean Sea,
whose waters are infested with blood-thirsty pirates. The voyage starts on 23rd November 1686. The player can assume the role of a merchant, adventurer, naval commander,
or a flamboyant commoner with a sword and a knack for adventures. The player needs to plan and manage the entire trip from determining the route to allocating the funds and
preparing a defense strategy against the pirates. The elector of Brandenburg is available for additional support. There are other important characters in the game who are
introduced from time to time. The player needs to engage with each of these characters to ensure a successful voyage. Each piece of land the player finds himself in will pose
a new threat or challenge, which would require altering the initial strategy. There would be battles to fight, both on the ground and at sea. There could also be one-on-one duels
to settle disputes or establish one’s superiority. The graphics of the game are above average with great attention to detail. The costumes and vocabulary of the time period have
been recreated with perfection. The game provides a top-down perspective and the game language is German.
