Description
Stratego is a strategy game released in 1990. It is the computerized version of a board game published by Accolade, Inc. The game is available on several
platforms including DOS, Macintosh, Amiga, and Commodore 64.
Stratego is inspired highly by the classic game of chess but has a modern and realistic approach to it. Each player gets an army of 40 soldiers of various
ranks Ranging from scouts and sergeants to captains and marshals. Each army has 5 bombs and a flag; however, these are fixed on their locations and cannot
be moved. Each of these warriors is represented by a playing piece and can move only in a particular pattern. The objective is to strike the flag of the
opponent's army. Like chess, each player takes turns in moving their pieces on the playing board. All the pieces, except Scouts, can move only one position
at a time. There are also some special pieces like Spies and miners that can greatly impact the outcome of the game if used correctly.
Every time a player occupies a position that is already under the command of an opponent, there is a military-style combat situation and the more powerful
of the two pieces gets removed from the game. The element of surprise comes from the fact that there is no way of knowing the position of the opposition
piece before the combat. Since the flags and bombs cannot be moved, some squares are out of bounds and the armies need to find their way around them and
strike them when the opportunity arises. The game offers superior graphics and several background options.
