Description
THE BERENSTAIN BEARS: LEARNING ESSENTIALS is an educational game published by Compton's New Media, Inc in 1992. The game runs on the
DOS platform and is also known as BBLE.
The game consists of three mini games based on colour, music and jigsaw puzzles. Each game has a different background image and theme,
which makes them seem like three independent games altogether. In the colour module, the game presents a picture and a colour palette
to colour the picture. The game resembles a colouring book, and the player has the option to choose a different picture or a different
colour palette. Also available are a bunch of stickers, word balloons and animations the player can use to spruce up the painting.
In the music module of the game, the player needs to solve a puzzle using musical notes. The player is presented with a selection of short
familiar tunes, mostly from nursery rhymes. With each tune, comes a picture that is associated with it. The tune is once played with the
picture as background image. It is then played a second time, but without the picture and only a black screen as background. As the tune
is played, it is paused randomly a few times, and a few options appear on the screen. The player needs to choose the right option for the
next note. On choosing the correct option, a part of the picture is revealed. the player now needs to repeat the process to uncover the
whole picture. This module has seven difficulty levels, and one is given the choice to choose from ten types of musical instruments.
In the puzzle module, the player is given a jigsaw puzzle to solve. The complete picture is of a Berenstain Bear. There are four difficulty
levels in the game; the player can choose between 8, 15, 60 or 60 pieces of Jigsaw titles to complete the picture.
