Description
The Crack of Doom is a fantasy adventure game, based on J. R. R. Tolkien's books about Middle-earth and set in the 'Lord of the Rings'
universe. Released in 1989, The Crack of Doom is the fourth in the series of middle-earth games developed by Beam Software.
The storyline is based on the last book of the Tolkien trilogy where Frodo and his band of hobbits are about to embark on the final
quest towards Mount Doom. Unlike the previous versions, the game allows the player to assume only one character, Sam Gamgee. However,
it is also credited for being more complex and longer than the previous games. Sam Gamgee begins his quest from the gates of Cirith
Ungol, towards the tower inside which his beloved mater Frodo is being held. To free his master, Sam needs to pass through a bloody
courtyard and outsmart the ferocious and terrifying orcs who are guarding a torture chamber.
With the odds against him, Sam needs to make a choice between freeing Frodo from the tower and completing the quest alone, and throwing
the ring of power into the raging fires of Mount Doom. The game is a text-based one, where the player types command on his keyboard to
progress in the game. The player needs to safeguard Sam from his enemies while guiding him through his quest. The game has drawn heavily
from the Lord of the Rings analogy and might be difficult for a player who is not familiar with the plot and characters of the books.
The game is a pure delight to the fans of the 'Lord of the Rings' Trilogy.
