Chapter 2 - Introduction
----------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to The Crystal Maze!
You are about to enter a fantasy world full of mind bending
puzzles and challenges. Based on Chatsworth Televisions top
rated Channel 4 show, The Crystal Maze computer program recreates
the atmosphere and excitement of the TV set and lets you take on
the challenges contained in the Mazes four fantasy zones.
For those of you who have not seen the TV show, and as a reminder
to those who have, you start your journey through the Crystal
Maze by entering one of the zones; either you can choose where
you start or you can let the computer choose for you. The four
zones, Aztec, Ocean, Futuristic and Medieval are very different
in appearance and atmosphere and contain quite different
challenges. These challenges fall into four categories, mental,
skill, physical and mystery to provide you with varied tests of
your talents. Once you have completed the challenges of the
first zone, move onto the next until you have completed all four.
The Crystal Maze can be played by one to six players who
undertake each challenge against the clock. If successful you
win a crystal - each one earns you five seconds of valuable
time in the final challenge of the Maze, The Crystal Dome.
Can you crack The Crystal Maze?

Chapter 3 - Getting Started
----------------------------------------------------------
ENTER THE MAZE
The Crystal Maze screen is divided into three parts...
* Main screen - this is where all of the game play takes place.
* Icons - these are explained on the next page.
* Information panel - this keeps you up to date with what is
happening and guides you through the Maze.
MOVING AROUND THE MAZE
Using function key short cuts:
Each icon position is assigned a function key which can be
used at any time in the program as an alternative to clicking
on an icon. For example function key F1 will always carry out
the same action as the icon at the top right hand corner,
F2 the icon below and so on. Ctrl + function key simulates a
double click on the icon.
Individual icons:
Green Tick - although the main screen does not contain this
icon many other screens do. Clicking on it confirms any choices
you have made and allows you to move on.
Cross Crystal - at the main screen double click on this icon
to leave The Crystal Maze and return to desktop. During the
game double click on this icon to end the game and return to
the main screen.
Info Crystal - this icon shows you the high score table and
at other times other information such as how many crystals
the team have won. Click on the up/down arrows to move
through the information.
Monitor Screen - click on this icon to enter the main program
set-up screen where you can change the way the game is played.
Faces - this icon takes you to the section of the program
where you choose your team members.
Plan of Maze - click on this icon to enter The Crystal Maze
and choose your first zone.
CONFIGURATION
Setting up/configuring the program:
From the main screen click on the Monitor Screen icon to enter
the set-up screen where you can control the sound, input devices
and level of difficulty.

Chapter 5 - The Games
----------------------------------------------------------
THE CRYSTAL MAZE - THE GAMES
PLAYER SELECTION
You play The Crystal Maze with a team of SIX players, just
like the TV show; you choose your team from the 12 characters
available. Choose carefully, the team you select has a direct
bearing on your chances of success in the Maze!
Click on the players of your choice until six are selected,
or, if you wish you can let the computer choose your team
randomly by clicking on the die icon. Click on the tick
icon when you have the team you want.
Each of the players has different strengths and weaknesses;
some are more suitable for some games than others. As you
undertake the challenges of the Maze you will discover their
characteristics for yourself; this will be great a help to
you when you choose your teams for later ventures into the
Maze.
ZONE SELECTION
Choose the zone where you wish to start The Crystal Maze;
click on the zone of your choice. Or, alternatively, click
in the Crystal Dome in the centre and the computer will
choose for you.
Once you have entered this part of the program you cannot
change the level of difficulty without going back to the
beginning and starting again from the main screen; to do
this double click on the Quit icon or press Ctrl - F1.
You will move around the Maze either clockwise or
anti-clockwise depending on the selection in the game set-up.
GAME SELECTION
The games, which reflect the atmosphere created in each zone,
are timed by different types of clock. Keep a close eye on
the clock as to run out of time can have disastrous consequences.
You play three games in each zone before moving on to the next,
unless you are in practice mode when you can play games in the
same zone for as long as you wish!
Game selection
When you enter a new zone or have just finished a game click on
the Question Mark icon to choose another game and the team member
to play it.
Game types
Games in The Crystal Maze fall into four categories - mental,
skill, physical and mystery. Each zone contains 6 games.
After entering the zone choose your player and then your game type
by clicking on the appropriate icon. If the icon is not bright
that game type is not available.
Game start icon
To start the game click on the zone icon; this only appears bright
if you have chosen both the game type and player selection. A
single click on Quit icon or F1 takes you back one screen.
WINNING CRYSTALS
Success at each game wins you a crystal. The time you have to win
a crystal begins as soon as you enter the game; there is no way you
can pause. The amount of time you have will vary depending on the
type of game and the level of difficulty set. You must either
complete the game successfully or get out of the game room before
your time is up. If you don't get out in time the player will be
trapped and locked in!
TO GET OUT OF A GAME PRESS CTRL-ESC.
Winning a crystal
If you complete a game successfully you are awarded one crystal;
you will see the crystal table showing the crystals won by the
team so far. Click on the down arrow and you will see how each
member of the team is performing.
Lock Ins.
A lock-in occurs if you run out of time as you are still playing
the game. Remember, Ctrl - Esc takes you safely out of the game.
On the player performance screen a padlock in the top left hand
corner indicates if the player is locked in. Any player locked
in plays no further part in the game unless he/she is bought out.
Buy outs.
It is important to have as many of the six players as possible
entering the final challenge in the Crystal Dome.
A player can be released by being bought out with a crystal won
in one of the other games; to do this click on the padlock.
Cashing in this crystal will mean 5 seconds less in the Crystal
Dome but an extra person to undertake the challenge.
You must buy out before you begin the last zone game, i.e. before
your twelfth game.
----------------------------------------------------------
Chapter 6 - The Zones
----------------------------------------------------------
THE FOUR CRYSTAL MAZE ZONES
Aztec zone
Based on a re-creation of the Aztec kingdom during the
15th/16th centuries, the Aztec zone is a bright outdoor
zone which reflects this period.
Ocean zone
This zone is set in the hull of a sunken ocean liner with
lavish fittings and decoration. The challenges contained
in this zone reflect the perils of those who set out to sea.
Medieval zone
Set in the depths of a medieval building, the atmosphere
here is one of mystery, intrigue and the harshness of life
in this period.
Futuristic zone
A cold, impersonal zone where lives are ruled by computers;
a taste of the future.
----------------------------------------------------------
Chapter 7 - The Dome
----------------------------------------------------------
THE FINAL CHALLENGE
After you have come through the four zones your team
must undertake the final challenge in the Crystal Dome.
The Crystal Dome is full of gold and silver tokens. The
aim of this final game is to collect as many gold tokens
as possible within the time available; any silver
tokens collected will be deducted from the gold total
thus affecting your final score.
Preparing for the Crystal Dome.
Before you enter the Crystal Dome you choose how many
players are to enter the Dome at once. Only players
locked in do not enter the Dome but the Crystals they
have earned are still credited to the rest of the team.
Each character has the same amount of time in the Dome;
click on the player or combination of players you wish
to enter. You can send all available team members into
the Dome at the same time if you wish. For example, if
you send six players in together the number of tokens
collected will be multiplied by six to arrive at the
final team score. Alternatively, if you are playing the
game with friends as a team, you will probably let each
team member enter the Dome individually.
IN THE CRYSTAL DOME
Entering the Dome
As soon as you click on this icon you enter the Dome,
the clock starts and time is running out! Move the
cross-hairs sight over the tokens as you see them
floating; click to catch them. Avoid catching silver
tokens as these will count against you. When all the
players have been into the Dome the computer will work
out your scores - the aim is to catch 100 more gold
tokens than silver - do this and you can honestly say
that you've cracked The Crystal Maze.
Token count
The computer will calculate the number of gold and
silver tokens and work out the difference to produce
your final tally. The final token count is then
converted to a final score taking into account the
level of difficulty set at the beginning of the game.
SCORING
High score table
The score will appear in the high score table (if it's
high enough), and you can then enter your name. The
score in your last game will be displayed below the
table.

Chapter 8 - Top Tips
----------------------------------------------------------
Ten Top Tips to cracking The Crystal Maze....
Take care when selecting your team, take your time. All
the characters have strengths and weaknesses and this
choice could mean the difference between winning and losing.
Tip: Dont judge a book by its cover.
Picture mysteries or will it be miseries! Merrily clicking
away wrongly at the crossword clues will eat up your
precious time.
Tip: Take your time look closely before clicking.
While being physical in the zones, always look for the finish
line (i.e. the crystals home). When moving around be very
careful to avoid the dangers.
Tip: Always look before you leap!
When entering each game the computer will give you a hint.
Try to use this to your advantage.
Tip: If useful information is provided, use it!
Before attempting a zone game always check in the top right
hand corner for the icon showing the input device to be used
for that game.
Tip: Always check for useful icons.
While playing any game always keep one eye on that clock. A
lock-in could cost you dearly later on.
Tip: Youre playing against a clock, not yourself.
Always listen for clock noises. A single clock noise occurs
at intervals during the game, however a series of five noises
starts at the 5 second countdown - if you hear these get out
of the game using Ctrl - Esc.
Tip: Always listen for important noises and sound effects.
When playing the end game in the Crystal Dome, try to grab
only gold tokens as they float around in front of you. Always
look around you, especially behind you and on the floor. The
gold tokens often group together making their collection a lot
easier.
Tip: Keep calm and dont click blindly.
The most important tip when entering any Crystal Maze game is,
to quote the Hitch Hikers Guide, '...Dont Panic!'
