Windmill Software was a game development company that developed games for the IBM PC in the early 80's. Windmill games were programmed with a strong underlying knowledge of the hardware, and many of them showed that knowledge with enhanced colors or sound, for example their unique use of the 160x100 16 colour mode on CGA graphics, or their early pulse with modulation of the PC speaker.
Windmill published nine games between 1982 and 1984, Styx being their last one. Almost all of their games were inspired by hits of the times, such as Styx is based on QIX and The Exterminator resembles Centipede with some twists. At least two of their games have had modern remakes, Digger and Styx.

Description
The Exterminator is an action and adventure game, published by Windmill Software Inc. in 1983. The game runs on the DOS platform, and is also
known as 'Ant Attack'.
In the game, there is a group of insects hovering on top of the screen and descending slowly towards the ground. To play the game, the player
must exterminate all the plants and insects, before they reach the ground. Different points are awarded for killing different types of insects,
and an extra gun is awarded once the player reaches 10000 points. An instruction menu pops up at the beginning of the game, explaining the rules
and the different points assigned to each plant or insect. Killing a scorpion is rewarded with 2000 points, which is the highest.
The player, armed with a gun, must shoot at the centipedes to stop them from touching the ground. The player can move about in the bottom layers
of the screen shooting at these centipedes that are coming towards the exterminator. There are also several barriers along the way which can
speed up the centipede hitting the ground. Once a centipede is shot at, it disintegrates into different parts, which then turn into mushrooms.
These mushrooms can form an obstruction between the descending centipedes and the shots fired by the player. These can also house different
insects and worms which could crawl their way to the exterminator if not eliminated in time. The game ends when the exterminator comes in contact
with an insect or work, or when the centipede hits the ground.
