Players:
2 to 4 may play, or 1 person against his alter ego. When 2 or more play they
Group into 2 teams (for 3 players, one team has 2 players and the other team
Has 1 player).
Free association chains:
Each chain consists of 7 phrases, each following by free association from the
One or two that connect with it. Initially the first and last phrases in the
Chain are given, and the task is to guess the other 5 phrases, one at a time,
But only the topmost or bottommost unguessed phrase at any given step. When
The last phrase is guessed, we have the connecting point of fact and fiction,
Space lore and psychodrama: the truly adept observer can then tell everything
About you and predict your fortune somehow (we won't cover that here).
Rounds:
A game is 3 or more rounds.
Scoring:
In round 1 the scoring is 10 points each for the 1st through 4th phrase, 15
Points for the 5th and last phrase. On succeeding rounds the scores increase
To 20 and 40 points, respectively.
Game:
The first team to 200 wins the game. (note: the maximum attainable points in
Round 1 are 4*10+15=55, in round 2 are 4*20+40=120, hence at least 3 rounds
Are needed to make 200 points.)
Control of the turn:
Initially the team with control of the turn is chosen at random by the
Computer. After that, control of the turn is governed by the game, as
Explained below.
Giver and guesser:
On each turn, each team has a giver and a guesser: the giver of the team with
Control of the turn "gives" a letter to the guesser of either team, and the
Designated guesser then has 15 seconds to guess the phrase. If there is only
1 person on a team, he/she is both giver and guesser for that team. Initially
The computer chooses the giver and guesser for each team.
Giving a letter:
Giving a letter means that the topmost or bottommost unguessed phrase has its
Next letter revealed. The designated guesser then must guess the entire
Phrase before the 15 seconds are up.
Note: to enter the phrase, just type it in, then hit <enter>.
If there is only one letter left in the phrase, it is not revealed except
By guessing the phrase. If your guess is a substring of the right answer,
It is accepted.
Turns:
If the designated guesser guesses the phrase, his team scores and gets/keeps
Control of the turn; if the guess is incorrect, the other team gets/keeps
Control of the turn.
A smart team may thus keep control of the turn all the way through the round
By giving the letters to the other team early on (hoping they can't guess the
Phrase), and to itself at the right point to guess the phrase.
Changing giver and guesser:
At the start of each round after the first, giver and guesser in each team
Must switch.
Missing link game:
At the end of round 2 the leading team gets to play the missing link game.
Here two phrases (separated by a third phrase) are given and the team must
Guess the missing link phrase.
$500 is awarded if the answer is given on the first guess, else for each
Incorrect guess one letter is added to the missing link phrase and $100
Subtracted from the winnings. If the winnings go down to $0, the missing
Link game is over. The missing link money does not count into the 200 points
Needed to win the game.
Jackpot:
The jackpot starts at $1000 and increases by $1000 each game. The winners
Of each game get a chance to win the jackpot in the bonus round. The jackpot
Value is saved on disk when the program is exited, so the next time the game
Is played it will keep building until won (note: maximum jackpot is one
Million play dollars).
Bonus round:
A 7-phrase chain is given, with the first phrase plus first letters of each of
The other 6 phrases revealed. The team then gets 7 free letters, meaning
That they must guess each phrase down the chain with at most 7 letters
Being revealed upon their guessing wrong (1 at a time). Each guess must be
Made within 10 seconds. The guess alternates between the 2 players on the
Team.
If all 7 phrases in the chain are guessed before running out of free letters,
The team gets the jackpot! Otherwise the team wins $100 for each phrase
Completed.
